All You Need Is Brass Neck
The other day some know-it-all told me that he didn't play the Ukulele because he found it such a limited instrument. He preferred the versatility of a proper instrument like a guitar. Then I listened to what he could do on a guitar and concluded that the reason why he couldn't get a uke to sing as he would want to is that he lacked the skill to do so.
The ukulele is as versatile as the player who uses it. With a lot of cheek, a good bit of talent and a hefty amount of practice you can just about play anything you want to on a uke.
Here's just a few examples to start with:-
James Hill and "Billie Jean".
Jake Shimabukuro does "Bohemian Rhapsody" all by himself.
Kris Fuchigami plays "Dueling Banjos" as a solo (albeit with piano accompaniment).
The Ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britain turn out with "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly".
and finally, D'Ukes give us "Smoke On The Water".
Limited, my arse!
